Luke 14:11 (NKJV)
For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
This truth Jesus speaks here is easy to demonstrate. I know I have felt like I was not getting the "credit" I deserved and have taken matters into my own hands. Now I cringe when I think of the embarrassment that has caused me before. That's practical advice but there is a deeper spiritual truth here. Rather than waiting on others to exalt you, we should wait and look forward to that affirmation from God: "Well done my good and faithful servant"
In rare cases I have experienced how it is to maintain an attitude of unworthiness, not false humility but a genuine understanding of my having been just a fool used by an all powerful God. It was clear to me, that although others might try to commend me, I could just point them to God.
1 Corinthians 1:27 (NKJV)
But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;
Matthew 25:23 (NKJV)
His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'
